Renzo
Piano was born in Genoa on 14th September 1937 and
graduated in architecture at the Politecnico of
Milan in 1964.
While at university, he worked under the guidance
of Franco Albini and, at the same time, would often
visit his father's building sites.
From 1965 to 1970, he had many opportunities to
be in touch with Louis I. Kahn - an experience which
profoundly influenced his own work.
He worked with Richard Rogers (Piano & Rogers)
from 1971 onward and with Peter Rice (Atelier Piano
& Rice) starting from 1977. The architect's
firms he currently runs in Genoa, Paris and Berlin
go under the name "Renzo Piano Building Workshops".
In Piano's own words, "We don't only design
things here; we also build and check them. The name
of our workshops is also a clear expression of the
sense of collaboration and group work which permeates
our work." Thanks to the construction of the
George Pompidou Centre (1971-1978), he acquired
a reputation as one of the major architects in the
world. When Piano was awarded the Pritzker Laureate
in 1988, the chairman of the Hyatt Foundation, Jay
A. Pritzker, defined his architectural work as an
extraordinary mix of art, architecture and engineering
in a truly unique synthesis.
Renzo Piano was the 21st architect in the world
to be given such recognition, and the second Italian,
after Aldo Rossi in 1990.
Among his other works are the San Nicola Stadium
in Bari (1989), Kansai Airport on the artificial
island in the bay of Osaka, Japan (1994), the Cultural
Centre in Noumea, New Caledonia (1998) and the wind
tunnel for Ferrari in Maranello (1998).
Works currently in progress are the new Auditorium
in Rome and the re-design of the famous Berlin square
"Potsdamer Platz".
Padre Pio's Spirituality
Spiritual
school
"Let
us always trust in God, and may our lively faith and the comfort of Christian
hope assist us in this. We must pray continually, moreover, that peace may soon
smile on the nations. We should turn our thoughts to heaven, our true homeland,
of which our earthly country is but a dim image, and make every effort with the
divine assistance to preserve at all times, amidst happy or sad events, the cheerful
calm that becomes the true followers of the fair Nazarene" (Epist. I,
p. 596)
