Padre Pio in Foggia

(February / 4 September 1916)

Padre Pio arrived here on 17 February 1916 and stayed until 4 September. At first he was cheerful and would joke with his fellow brothers, but suddenly he came down with a "fever". He was found to suffer from "microbial infection of the right apex, with light traces of murmur on the left". The devil came to harass him during his period of illness and spiritual troubles. Instead of having supper, Padre Pio used to retire to his cell. One evening, while the friars were all gathered in the refectory, "a strong rumbling sound came from his room, which was situated right over the refectory vault." This was only the first of a number of similar events, after which he was found "in a pool of sweat which necessitated a complete change of clothing." .

The noises ceased when the Provincial Father, Padre Benedetto from San Marco in Lamis, told Padre Pio that that his desire was they should no longer be heard. Padre Pio prayed and the Lord answered his prayers. The noises stopped, but not the assaults of the devil, who continued to torment poor Padre Paio at the same time, after supper.
"Why do we have our Lord, what sense is there in the sweet and loveable condition of the Holy Child of Bethlehem, if not to make us love Him trustingly and to entrust ourselves lovingly to him?" (Epist. IV p. 346 s.).

"Let us always trust in God, and may our lively faith and the comfort of Christian hope assist us in this. We must pray continually, moreover, that peace may soon smile on the nations. We should turn our thoughts to heaven, our true homeland, of which our earthly country is but a dim image, and make every effort with the divine assistance to preserve at all times, amidst happy or sad events, the cheerful calm that becomes the true followers of the fair Nazarene"
(Epist. I, p. 596)
